How to Handle the Big Moments in Life and Career
Our Moms in Tech community was recently treated to an inspiring conversation on navigating life’s biggest transitions - both personal and professional. Led by our sponsors, The Board of Life, CEO David Kidder and Head of Marketing Christina Ducruet joined us to share strategies for mastering change with clarity and confidence.
While some of the conversation is exclusive to Moms in Tech members, we found the takeaways to be so valuable that we wanted to share some highlights with our broader community.
Managing Transitions
Sometimes they’re scary, sometimes they’re exciting, sometimes they’re both. One thing is certain about major life transitions: they happen to us all, and rarely on our timetable.
David and Christina introduced the concept of defining our “From-To” moments, those moments in our lives when change is imminent and anxiety tends to peak. They reminded us that while uncertainty can be overwhelming, it can also be a catalyst for growth. Keeping steady during these times starts with awareness and intention.
The key theme for our discussion was empowerment through awareness. By understanding where we are and where we want to go, we can move from a reactive mindset to one of intentional action. Their approach draws on behavioral psychology and AI insights to help participants set intentions for growth, focused on progress, positivity, and the ability to make choices from a grounded sense of clarity.
Five Actionable Steps to Confront Change
While transitions can feel daunting, small and intentional steps can help you create meaningful momentum and remove that feeling of being “stuck.” Here are a few tips that we discussed during our recent event:
Defining your “From-To”
Write down where you are and where you want to go, personally, professionally, or a combination of both. Ask yourself tough questions: what truths am I avoiding? What choices am I delaying? Naming these and being honest with yourself can help clarify your way forward.
Practice honest reflection
Free-writing for 5-10 minutes a day about what’s changing in your life can be incredibly clarifying. Clear out the “debris” in your mind by sharing unedited, honest reflections and share what you’ve written with a trusted mentor or friend who can reflect back what they see in you. Sometimes clarity can come from being witnessed honestly.
Identify microfailures
These small moments of friction or frustration can signal areas of growth. Rather than avoiding these tough topics, use them to guide you forward toward what matters most to you.
Center your truth
When fear or uncertainty arises, pause and connect with what you value most. Don’t hesitate to ask yourself if you’re investing your energy in what truly matters to you before making big decisions. This can offer improved opportunities for alignment with your goals.
Reclaim your agency
Transitions are an invitation to rediscover what’s truly within your control. Separate your identity from your job title. Invest in yourself, through coaching, learning, or self care, to ensure your next chapter best reflects who you are and who you wish to become.
